Fun Friday … That is so 1992 of You

Friday, January 27th, 2012

Posted by: Lori Wilhite

Not too long ago my ultra hip husband tweeted: The Cowboys are awesome …. Not!

To which I responded: That is so 1992 of you.

And, as luck would have it, all of Twitter agreed with me.

A few weeks after I busted Jud, Tiffany’s husband Herbert tweeted a little Talk to the hand, cuz the face ain’t listening.

Of course I couldn’t let that go without a little: Hello, 1990.

I do this all the time. I hear some kind of blast from the past comment, take a random shot in the dark at the year it came from, and throw it out there. I’m probably never right on the year, but it is one of those things that I really crack myself up saying, even though I’m probably the only one laughing.

I know my husband isn’t the only one who does this. In fact, most of us have at least one silly thing that we’ve yet to let go of. Maybe it is a saying. Maybe a playlist. Maybe a fashion piece.

About two years ago, my friend Holly Furtick told me in one of her fashion blogs that I needed to let my toe ring go. I can’t do it. I like it. It was a little my-feet-will-never-be-giant-and-swollen-again-because-I’m-not-having-more-kids gift that I got myself after I had Ethan. So here it is 2012, and I’m still sporting my cute toe ring. It is very 1998 of me.

This weekend’s assignment: What are you still holding on to? What year is it from (even if it is a random guess)? And Why?

Fun Friday … Nacho Average Pastor’s Wife

I absolutely loved Tiffany’s post yesterday. And in the spirit of embracing who we are, we proudly proclaim that we  are “Nacho Average”. I mean, you know how I feel about typical.

So, I’m loving seeing pictures of everyone sporting their new “Nacho Average” shirts. Check out how great Toni, Melissa, and Joy look:

Today I want to hear what makes you a “Nacho Average” Pastor’s Wife or Woman in Ministry. What’s something not-so-typical about you? Let’s hear it!

Me? Oh so many things to choose from. I’ll add them in the comments as we go.

** Don’t forget that you can grab a shirt of your own HERE. And make sure to send us a picture of how cute you are so we can post it later!

Fun Friday…Christmas Morning!

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

I discovered, shortly after getting married, that not all families do Christmas morning the same way…or actually not all families do Christmas the right way!:) Now my husband would tell you that I only think it is the right way because it is the way my family did it. However, after very thorough investigation, I still conclude the way we celebrated Christmas is the correct way. Let me give you a breakdown of an Evans family Christmas morning:

We were not allowed to enter our family room until the Christmas tree was on and my dad was ready with his camera.

Santa gifts were ALWAYS unwrapped (Santa is extremely busy Christmas Eve and has no time to wrap gifts!)

MOST IMPORTANTLY we then unwrapped gifts ONE AT A TIME…youngest to oldest

Needless to say, the first time I celebrated with David’s family and the room suddenly turned into a confetti storm of wrapping paper as everyone ripped into all their gifts at the SAME time, I was traumatized! I mean…NO ONE took turns!

It turns out David says he felt traumatized the first time he realized gift opening was a production in my house that could go on indefinitely.

What are your Christmas morning traditions? PS…After 14 Christmas mornings together, we still open the gifts one at a time…David is a trooper!

Fun Friday … What Not To Buy Your Child’s Teacher

Thursday, December 1st, 2011

Every Christmas I struggle to find the perfect gift for my children’s teachers. I don’t want to get them another coffee mug, apple decoration, or candle. They get all of those items in droves. I want to get them something special, because they are such a large influence in my children’s life during this time.

I was a teacher before I had kids, and one of the things that touched my heart the most was a long thank you letter that one of my student’s mother wrote me. She wrote about specific ways I had helped her daughter throughout the year.

Christmas is a busy time of year to sit down and do that for all their teachers, so I included this sweet poem for you to use if you are searching for something sweet to add to your teacher’s gift this year. Warning, you may need a kleenex when you read it. :)

I need your help!!!! What are some special gifts that you have given to teachers.?If you are a teacher, what are your favorite gifts to get at Christmas?

A Loving Teacher

Things our grown-up mind defies
Appear as giants in children’s eyes.
A gentle touch upon her head
A simple word when kindly said.
Complete attention when she calls.
Her knowing you have given all.
Correcting in a loving way.
Instilling trust in what you say.
Making her believe unique
The tiny flaw upon her cheek.
Admiring old and faded dresses.
Reminding her we all make messes.
Words of comfort you’ve softly spoken
A promise you’ve made she knows won’t be broken.
Your knowing her doll that was lost today
Is just as important as bills you can’t pay.
Helping make her plans and schemes
Giving her hope and building her dreams.
All of this and so much more
Is in her mind forever stored.
They who touch her life awhile
Can either make or break that child.
Education is important, true,
But so much more, her faith in you.
You’ve weathered through the storm and strife;
You helped to build a small girl’s life.
You’re truly one to be admired.
For you gave more than was required.

What’s Your Flavor … Cooking

Thursday, October 13th, 2011

My Emma and I were cuddled up and chatting Monday night. I was reminding her, as I often do, that she is incredibly lucky to have the “cool parents.” She always giggles and thinks I’m a little nuts. I was listing off all the super-cool things about Jud and I, when she said, “We are kind of like a super family, with super powers.”

According to Emma here are our super powers:

Daddy: With the power to use the good words of the Bible to beat the bad guys.

Emma: With the power of cuteness. When the bad guys faint due to her super cuteness, we can defeat them.

Ethan: With the power of imagination. Anything he can imagine can really happen.

Roxy (our bulldog): With the power of laser beam eyes.

Then, she paused and so sweetly looked at me and said, “Mom, what can your super power be?

… Oh, I know …”

Mom: With the power of bad cooking and the ability to food poison the bad guys.

Now that, my friends, deserves a high-five for hilarity! Obviously, my fumbling in the kitchen is quite obvious to my kids. I am no Martha Stewart!

So, here is the What’s Your Flavor task for this weekend:

On a scale of 1-10 (10 being a Food Network star and 1 being me with the power of bad cooking), how capable are you in the kitchen? Love it or avoid it?
